Brief:
When the turner prize nominated video
artist came to us he had a major problem,
the centre piece of his new installation
(which was due to open in under two weeks)
was far from finished. The video featured
a looping 360 tracking shot around an
actor, supposed to give the impression
of a never ending shot. However, at the
end of the camera move, the position of
the actors head, his facial expression
and even the framing of the shot had all
noticeably changed causing a massive jump
where the supposedly invisible edit would
be. The problem was compounded by the
fact that the video would be shown on
8ft wide screens which would show up the
tiniest imperfection in the footage.
Solution:
By meticulously painting in the actors
position from the beginning of the loop
into the end of the piece, matching the
grain, and lighting and by reframing the
video, smoothing out the camera move we
were able to seamlessly blend the beginning
and end of the footage, giving the desired
illusion of one never ending shot. The
piece (which featured the voice of Kenneth
Brannagh) successfully opened in London,
Zurich and New York to rave reviews.
